Search Detroit Recent Bookings

Detroit recent bookings are tracked through two main systems. The Wayne County Sheriff Connect portal lists inmates held at the county jail, while the Detroit Detention Center holds people before arraignment. Detroit is the largest city in Michigan with about 640,000 residents, and the police department logs a high volume of arrests each year. You can look up current booking records and find arrest data through the county jail search tool or by filing a public records request with the city. Most booking info shows up in the system within hours of an arrest.

The main way to find Detroit recent bookings is through the Wayne County Sheriff Connect inmate search. This tool covers all three Wayne County jail facilities. You can search by name or booking number. Results show the arrest date, charges, bond amount, and where the inmate is housed. The system updates throughout the day as new bookings come in.

To use Sheriff Connect, go to the search page and type in a last name. You can add a first name to narrow results. The tool also lets you pick a date range or choose a specific jail facility from the drop-down menu. Each result shows a booking photo along with case details. Wayne County averages about 8 new bookings per day across its three facilities, so the list changes often.

Wayne County runs three separate jail buildings for Detroit area inmates. Jail Division I sits at 570 Clinton Street with room for 867 people. Jail Division II is at 525 Clinton Street and holds up to 770. Jail Division III, on 3501 Hamtramck Drive, has a capacity of 896. All three are in or near downtown Detroit. After arrest, the jail staff runs a medical screening with over 100 questions before placing someone in a housing unit.

Detroit Detention Center

Detroit also runs its own lockup. The Detroit Detention Center is a pre-arraignment holding facility run by the Detroit Police Department. It is not a county jail. People held here have been arrested but have not yet gone before a judge. Once arraignment happens, inmates transfer to the Wayne County Jail system.

Because the Detention Center is a short-term hold, the person you are looking for may not show up in Sheriff Connect right away. If an arrest just took place, it can take several hours for the booking to appear in the county system. You may need to call the Detroit Police Department at (313) 267-4600 for the most current status on someone who was just picked up.

Detroit Police Department Records

The Detroit Police Department keeps its own arrest records separate from the county jail system. Their headquarters is at 7310 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48202. The non-emergency line is (313) 267-4600. You can call this number to ask about recent arrests or to get the status of someone in custody.

The Detroit Police Department website provides information on services and programs. Below is a screenshot of the department's main page.

FOIA Requests for Detroit Bookings

Michigan law gives the public a right to access government records. Under MCL 15.231, every person can request records from a public body. This includes booking logs, arrest reports, and mugshots held by the Detroit Police Department or Wayne County Sheriff. Booking photos are public records in Michigan, as confirmed by the Patterson v. Allegan County Sheriff case.

To get Detroit booking records through FOIA, you submit a written request to the City of Detroit FOIA Coordinator. Your request should name the person, give a date range, and describe which records you want. The agency must respond within 5 business days. They can take up to 10 more days for complex requests. Fees run about $0.10 per page for copies, and search time can be billed in 15-minute blocks.

Some records may be held back under MCL 15.243. This section lists exemptions that protect ongoing investigations, medical records, and information that could risk facility security. If your request is denied, the agency must cite the specific exemption. You can appeal a denial to the head of the public body or file a lawsuit in circuit court.

For Wayne County jail records specifically, use the Wayne County FOIA portal or the Wayne County FOIA form. The county handles its own records separate from the city of Detroit.

Note: Indigent requesters in Michigan may qualify for a fee waiver on the first $20 of FOIA costs by submitting an affidavit.

Beyond the local jail search, Michigan offers state-level tools that cover Detroit arrests. The ICHAT system run by Michigan State Police lets you search criminal histories for $10 per name. It shows felony convictions and serious misdemeanors from all 83 counties. ICHAT does not show pending charges or recent bookings that have not led to a conviction yet.

The MDOC OTIS search covers people in state prison, on parole, or on probation. This tool is free. It does not list county jail inmates. So if someone was just booked in Detroit and is waiting for trial at Wayne County Jail, OTIS will not show them. Use Sheriff Connect for that.

You can also check VINELink to track an offender's custody status and get alerts when they are released. Under MCL 28.241, the state sets rules for how criminal records are stored and shared. These tools give you different ways to find booking and arrest information for people in the Detroit area.
